Fontys University of Applied Sciences

Who are we?

The name ‘Fontys’ was derived from the Latin word, ‘Fons’, which means ‘source’. Fontys aspires to be a dynamic source of knowledge, development, innovation and inspiration. Fontys University of Applied Sciences is the second largest institute of higher education in Holland. Fontys course programmes are offered at 22 locations within Holland, with a high concentration of institutes in the southern part of the country. Major campuses are located in Eindhoven, Tilburg and Venlo and smaller institutes are located in Sittard, Rotterdam, Veghel and 's-Hertogenbosch. The Fontys Institute of Teacher Education is located at the Tilburg Campus and offers 18 Bachelor and 13 Master programmes for more than 4000 (aspriring) teachers.

What can we do for you?

Fontys participates in project LINPILCARE through members of the Professorship of Science and Mathematics Education. The professorship started out in 2012 and aims at improving secondary science and maths education through practitioner inquiry in professional learning communities.

We are currently establishing science and mathematics oriented professional learning communities (PLC’s) for teachers in secondary education in the south of the Netherlands. At the moment there are two operational PLC’s on science teaching, one on the ‘Technasium’ school concept, and on pre vocational chemistry education. If you are interested in starting a PLC, please contact us.

How can you contact us?

You can contact us through the Fontys website (www.fontys.edu) or via the webpage of the professorship (www.betadidactiek.nl; in Dutch).

Our contribution to the project:

As part of project LINPILCARE we will expand our coaching activities for professional science teacher learning communities in the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are in charge of surveying teachers’ prior knowledge and effects of the project on practitioner inquiry, professional learning communities and teachers’ access to academic research.
